Eritrea’s army move into buffer zone violates Algiers agreement

21 October 2006

Addis Ababa - Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said Eritrea by moving its military force into the buffer zone has violated the Algiers agreement.

Speaking to journalists, the Prime Minister said Eritrea’s move has broken the negotiated truce.

Ethiopian Radio quoted Meles as having said this action by Eritrea has come in the way as a breach of the truce, although it would not bring about a fundamental change in the prevailing conditions.

UN Secretary General Koffi Annan earlier condemned Eritrea’s army build up in the security zone.

Following the entering into the buffer zone of Eritrea’s 1,500 soldiers and 14 tanks, Annan warned the Eritrean government to immediately pull its army back.
