Addis Ababa, February 27, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - The celebration of the 111th anniversary of the victory of Adowa comes as a unique national event as it falls on the eve of the Ethiopian Millennium and in the aftermath of the victory gained over terrorists, President of the Association of Ancient Ethiopian Patriots, Leketiguhan Astatke said.
Students of higher learning institutions on their part hailed the counter terrorism, and called for vigilance to foiling any such threat in the future.
Ethiopia celebrates the 111th anniversary of the Adowa Victory on Thursday.
The president, Leketiguhan told Ethiopian News Agency on Tuesday that anti-peace forces had been trying to destabilize Ethiopia. "I'm happy to see anti-Ethiopia forces crushed in the hands of the present generation."
He said safeguarding the nation’s peace is the responsibility of every citizen.
Yohannes Tasew and Belachew Seraw, Students at Addis Ababa University and Arbaminch University, respectively, said they are proud of the government's action in thwarting terrorism.
They stressed that the government should further intensify activities to fight terrorism. The youth should rally behind the government in the effort of ensuring peace and security, they said.
Adowa victory was a historic victory gained in 1896 over Italian forces who invaded Ethiopia with a motive to colonize.
Emperor Menelik II led the Ethiopian Army to a decisive victory against the Italians, and ensured an independent Ethiopia, as did his predecesors Emperor Yohannis IV and Emperor Tewodros in defence of the country sovereignty against repeated foreign aggressions.
