19 February 2007

Ethiopia's double world 5000m champion and world indoor 5000m record holder Tirunesh Dibaba has pledged to donate 50,000 birr to support children infected with HIV/AIDS.

The news was announced at a press conference with Tirunesh at the end of last week which was the first time that Dibaba had taken part in such an event in her own country. Dibaba said that the money will be donated through UNICEF, the UN-based organization that recently appointed her as its Goodwill Ambassador.

The press conference was also an opportunity for her to set the record straight about her relationship with Meseret Defar. Commenting on Defar’s recent world indoor record over 3000m, Dibaba said: “I am happy to see the record coming back to Ethiopia.” On her defeat by Defar in last summer’s Golden League meeting in Berlin, she said :”I was upset about that at the time but now we have again become friends.”
