Commission, University sign distance education agreement

Addis Ababa, January 29, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - The Federal Police Commission and the government of South Africa on Sunday signed an agreement that would enable police members benefit from a distance education training in various fields.

Deputy Director General of the Commission, Hassan Shifa and Vice- Chancellor of University of South Africa (UNISA) Professor Narend Baijnath signed the agreement.

Speaking on the occasion, Hassan said sharing experience with South Africa has a significant contribution in modernizing the profession of police.

This is the third agreement to be signed between the two sides, Hassan said, adding that South Africa has been providing training to the Ethiopian police.

The distance education would enable police members at regional and federal levels to provide better services to the community.

Prof. Baijnath said the training has been launched based on discussions held between South African President Thabo Mbeki, and Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.

The training would further strengthen the existing relationship between the two countries.

Regular and Professional Training Department Head with the Ethiopian Police College, Commander Fikre Woldegabriel on his part said as the training was provided to senior management bodies, it would bring about change in a short period of time.

Commander Fikre said a number of Ethiopian police members have received training in South Africa.
