18 January 2007

Addis Ababa, January 17, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Donald Yamamoto has said Ethiopia is a major partner of the United States in economic and political partnership.

Ambassador Yamamoto said along with Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya Ethiopia is a pilar to United State's development partnership in Africa.

In a press statement on Wednesday, the Ambassador said his country will do its utmost to help fast-track Ethiopia's social, economic and political development in the years ahead.

He said Ethiopia will receive significant support from the U.S. in the areas of capacity building, education and health services.

He said his government will also be supporting Ethiopia in its bid to accede to WTO membership.

He said his mission would work towards attracting foreign direct investment to Ethiopia - a country which surpasses many African countries in its suitability for trade and investment partnership.

He said Ethiopia ranks 6th in the world in its contribution of peacekeeping force for global peace.

He said his country wishes to see a peaceful and stable national government in Somalia.

He appreciated Uganda's commitment to contribute troops as AU peacekeeping mission to Somalia, and called on other countries to do the same. He said his country will give the necessary morale and economic support for the realization of an EU peacekeeping mission to Somalia.
