Addis gets digital mapping, orthophotography system

03 May, 2007

Addis Ababa, May 2, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - The city of Addis Ababa has taken one major step towards joining the status of well-advanced cities in the world with completion of its Digital Mapping and Orthophotography project.

More than 7.5 million Birr was spent on the city's digital map data and orthophoto system building.

Cities in developed countries are well in advance of using the digital mapping and orthophotography technology, which as part of the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) offers a wide range of functionality, says Mayor Berhane Deressa of the Addis Ababa Caretaker Administration at the opening here on Wednesday of a two-day relevant seminar.

Rolk Becker, Managing Director of Maps Geosystem, the project contractor, said at the launching seminar that the system enables access to multiple information.

The map consists of the details of the landscape of the city, he said.

The city information and documentation department acting head, Desta Jula on his part said the orthophoto pictures contain details information of the city.

The orthophoto, which, has been taken at the end of 1999E.C and at the beginning of 1998 E.C, enabled to, manages and administer the land and land related information.

Orthophotography is enhanced aerial photography. It's been adjusted so than we can measure a round surface (like the earth) on a flat surface (like a piece of paper). Using these maps, you can see everything on the ground clearly and measure it at the same time.

Orthophotography lets you accurately: measure distances, calculate areas of objects like buildings or parks, identify objects or places like your house, calculate compass directions, find the latitude and longitude for a location

Orthophotography is part of the basemap in a geographic information system (GIS). It is used like a photograph as a visual reference. And, since it has the qualities of a map, it can be used to create other important mapping data.
