Donors Pledge 7.5 Million Birr In Support of Construction of Cardiac Center

Addis Ababa, March 26, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Over 7.5 million Birr has been pledged in support of the completion of the new cardiac center, which is under construction by the Children's Heart Fund of Ethiopia (CHFE).

President Girma Woldegiyorgis urged the public to uphold the deep-rooted culture of mutual assistance for better performance.

Speaking at a telethon program held at Sheraton Addis on Sunday, President Girma said Ethiopians should further enhance the culture of helping one another instead of waiting for external assistance.

The president said on-going efforts to finalize the construction of the cardiac center should further be enhanced.

Minister of Health, Dr. Tewodros Adhanom on his part said the establishment of the up-to-date cardiac center would contribute a lot for Ethiopians as well as Africans.

The persons who have taken the initiative for the construction of the center are indeed role models, he said.

Founder and Board President of CHEF, Dr. Belay Abegaz said the center would save the lives of lots of children and adults who are suffering from heart diseases.

Dr. Belay said the center would also serve as a training center in the field of cardiology and related issues.

CHEF has decided Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Alamudi to be the patron of the new cardiac center, he said.

Various individuals and organizations pledged to provide over 7 million birr during the telethon while the would-be patron of the center pledged to donate 5 million Birr, he added.
