CUD leaders to be released after signing document

25 June, 2007

Agree to partial responsibility

Detained Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) leaders are expected to be out of prison, as all have on Saturday afternoon signed a legal document in which they have taken partial responsibility for the turmoil that ensued after the May 2005 elections, reliable sources told The Reporter.

Initially some CUD leaders had turned down the proposal by Professor Isaac Ephraim and lawyer Tamiru Wondimagegn but following negotiations all agreed to sign the document.

The negotiators are to submit the document to the prime minister after which a final decision is expected, according to the sources.

It is to be recalled that the government had made indications that it was willing to release the detained opposition leaders if they were willing to take responsibility and apologize for the incidents that followed the last election.

Diplomats have been making efforts for the release of the detained opposition leaders whom the court handling the case convicted recently.
