Addis Ababa, May 27, 2007 (WIC) - Ethiopia has become the top non-oil-dependent African country to achieve a double digit economic growth for four consecutive years, according to the Public Relations Adviser of the Prime Minister.

In an interview he gave to journalists in connection with the 16th anniversary of May 28, the Adviser, Bereket Simon, said though many Sub-Sahara African countries have been registering economic growth in recent years, Ethiopia's achievements during the last four years are unique as they were registered in the absence of petroleum resources.

Keeping in this pace Ethiopia could certainly join the middle income countries club over the coming 20 to 30 years, he said, noting that there have been remarkable economic growth across the country since the public increasingly focused on development endeavors as a basic solution to the problems facing the nation instead of expecting miracles to happen.

According to the adviser, such a remarkable growth is a clear manifestation of the effective leadership of Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) which formulated the economic, political, democratization and good governance policies and strategies of the country on the existing realities.

Asked about the current situation with regard to democratization and good governance, Bereket said EPRDF believes that even if the foundations for a democratic system have been laid in Ethiopia ensuring good governance remain unsatisfactory making it one of the major priorities of the government as a lot remains to be done in this regard.

Responding on what the areas of focus of EPRDF would be during the millennium, the adviser pointed out that scaling up the current development endeavors and a major leap forward in ensuring good governance would be the two priorities of the Front in the new millennium, alongside promoting its policies and strategies at home and among the Ethiopian Diaspora.

Ethiopia’s role in the international arena, particularly in Africa, has been growing significantly over the past 16 years as it has been for example undertaking effective peace keeping operations in Burundi, Liberia, Rwanda, and took the lead in enabling the internationally recognized Transitional Federal Government of Somalia better control the country so as to ensure peace, order and development, he concluded.
