Addis Ababa, April 5 (WIC)– The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission appealed today to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to do its level best in rescuing the abducted Ethiopians in Afar State.
In a letter written to OHCHR Commissioner Louise Arbour, Ethiopian Human Rights Chief Commissioner Dr Kassa Gebreheywot said the commission has been following the fate of all the abducted individuals and is really pleased to learn that all the five European nationals had eventually been released safe.
He expressed gratitude for the unstinted efforts exerted by the international community in general, concerned bodies as well as the international media in particular for the release the hostages.
The Chief Commissioner however stated that it is unfortunate to learn that after the release of the European nationals, little efforts are being exerted except by the government to rescue the remaining eight Ethiopian hostages.
As the abduction is a clear violation of human rights, the international community and the OHCHR have the obligation to do whatever within their reach to help rescue the remaining abducted Ethiopians, he underscored.
Dr Kassa finally expressed conviction that OHCHR can possibly make a difference on the fate of the abducted Ethiopians and the restitution of their human rights.
