Board of Pardon begins examining forgiveness request

18 July, 2007

Addis Ababa, July 18, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - The Ethiopian Board of Pardon has begun looking into the plea for pardon made by the leaders and members of the CUD who were convicted and sentenced of charges of treason in connection with the unrest that followed the May 2005 elections.

The board on Tuesday has started to examine the tender for pardon by 38 of the total 71 applicants who meet the requirement.

In a statement it sent to ENA on Wednesday, the board said the leaders and members of the CUD admitted that their attempt to rid of the constitutionally established government functions through the use of unconstitutional means for disagreements that had emanated from the 2005 elections was mistaken.

Hence, the leaders and members of CUD said they shall take, individually and collectively, responsibility for the blunder, the statement said.

They said they shall not fall back on such a misstep they had committed and will take upon themselves to stand by their national duty and responsibility to abide by and safeguard the Constitution as well as to accept the constitutionally established government institutions, their powers and duties vested on them.

Only prisoners convicted could apply for forgiveness, the board said, adding 38 of the total 71 people meet the requirement.
