Addis Ababa, August 15, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - The Metropolitan Millennium Secretariat said on Wednesday that Ethiopia is the sole country, which is closing to achieve the UN’s Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign.
The Secretariat said the United Nations has recently launched a campaign to transplant one billion tree seedlings across the world, while Ethiopia alone has managed to transplant more than 900 million tree seedlings under its millennium campaign.
Secretariat director, Kiros Hailesilassie made the remark here on Wednesday at a tree seedling planting campaign organized by World Vision Ethiopia to transplant over 800 indigenous tree seedlings.
Kiros said Ethiopia, under its "Two Trees for 2000" millennium celebration campaign, has already started planting 60 million trees on June 5,2007, the official launching day of the Ethiopian millennium celebration.
However, he said, we luckily managed to push the campaign further and now we are able to plant over 972 million tree seedlings in several regions of the country.
Accordingly, Kiros said, Ethiopia is already on the way to meet the goal set by the United Nations to plant one billion trees worldwide.
Speaking at the occasion World Vision-Ethiopia director, Tenagne Lema said the organization has been engaged in seedling transplanting campaign of over two million seedlings in the country.
Close to 1,200 employees of the organization are participating in the campaign being undertaken in 60 woredas of seven regions, Tenagne said.
At the occasion carried out at The Millennium Park, which is located in Yeka Sub-city of the metropolis over 400 employees of World Vision-Ethiopia have transplanted over 800 indigenous trees.
Similarly, over 100 employees of the Ethiopian Social Security Agency have transplanted over 200 indigenous tree seedlings at the same spot.
Agency public relation officer, Ferezewed Nebro told Ethiopian News Agency on the event that the employees are committed to celebrate the millennium by undertaking significant activities, which would be passed for generations.
