Seven years after most of the world marked the beginning of the 21st century, Ethiopia is finally approaching the year 2000. Thanks to its unique and ancient system of measuring time.
Ethiopia is being the only African country having its own calendar and the African Union (AU) in its ordinary session of the Assembly of Heads of State and government through declaration AU/ December 6 (Vii) adopted Ethiopian millennium as an historic African occasion.
In view of the spirit of the African Union declaration, the Ethiopian Embassy in Nigeria in collaboration with the public and private sectors as well as Nigerians who are lovers and friends of Ethiopia have started preparations to colourfully celebrate the millennium with various programmes.
Speaking with the Entertainment desk on the objectives to be achieved by the millennium celebration in Nigeria, a member of the millennium celebration committee in Nigeria, Ras. Chidi Umeh, explained that the objectives include:
To strengthen cultural ties between Ethiopia and Nigeria, promote Ethopia-Nigeria Tourism, trade and investment opportunities, solicit corporate and public sectors support for the millennium projects in Nigeria and Ethiopia and establish Ethio-Nigeria friendship Association among others.
He disclosed that here in Nigeria the first activity took place in Abuja recently at the Transcop Hilton Hotel Abuja where the Ethiopian National troupe entertained guests to a unique cultural night and among the quests that attracted the occasion were the minister of culture and tourism Adetokunbo Kayode and the Ethiopian Ambassador, Suleiman Dedefo among other dignitaries.
Here in Rivers State Ras Chidi Umeh, Chief Executive Officer of Iroko production and promotion, the parent body of Reggea World Port Harcourt, said, the activities laid up include ‘Two tree for 2000’ event, musical Jamboree and other social events in Rivers and Bayelsa States.
He said Rastas in both states would play active roles in all the events aimed at ushering in the Ethiopian millennium on Tuesday, twelve midnight.
