Last week witnessed long queues in every corner of Addis Abeba as residents who wanted to acquire ordinary subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards for their mobile phones packed in front of, and around branches of the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) and private establishments that the former licensed to sell SIM cards.
Despite the early morning rain , on Saturday August 09, 2008 , this 200-meter long queue of about 400 people hopeful of being able to purchase an ordinary SIM card had already begun forming before 7:00 am at one of ETC’s branches near Olympia in front of Aster Pharmacy, off DRC Congo Road.
Etc has also launched the sale of third generation (3G) mobile technologies SIM cards for the latest service in Ethiopia, a telecom package that supports more enhanced services, including internet access, audio and video calling, call waiting, call divert, voice mail and high quality image transmission allowing multimedia message services (MMS)
