Addis Ababa, June 19, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Foreign Affairs Minster, Seyoum Mesfin said the General Assembly of the United Nations has recognized the celebration of the Ethiopian Millennium as a unique African occasion.
Seyoum, who is also vice president of the Ethiopian Millennium Council, said here on Tuesday that Ethiopia has requested the General Assembly of the UN to recognize the celebration, explaining the event as one of the traditions and cultures of the world that had passed down from generation to generation.
Accordingly, Seyoum said, the general assembly confirmed that all members states have welcomed Ethiopia’s request to internationally recognize the celebration, which could be seen as a base for worldwide cooperation and collaboration.
The adoption by the UN General Assembly ensures that member states are standing by the side of Ethiopia, recognizing the celebration as World Millennium in promoting and creating friendship among international community, he said.
Recalling the adoption by the Assembly of the African Union to make Ethiopian Millennium an African occasion, Seyoum said Africans once again showed their strong support to Ethiopia.
Seyoum extended his gratitude to African brothers and sisters as well as the international community for their recognition of the Ethiopian Millinnium.
According to the official website of UN General Assembly, the UN adopted the text on the Ethiopian Millennium, recognizing the year from 12 September 2007 to 11 September 2008 as the year commemorating the Ethiopian Millennium.
Acknowledging that the Ethiopian Millennium starts on 12 September 2007, it welcomed the Declaration adopted by the Assembly of the AU that recognized the Millennium as a unique African occasion.
The Assembly also called upon all AU Member States, the Commission of the AU and regional economic communities to extend their support towards its successful celebration.
Introducing that text, Ethiopia’s representative said the event was not only for celebrating the unique and distinct nature of Ethiopia’s calendar system, but also an occasion to overcome the diverse socio-economic difficulties facing his country, according to the website.
