Pastoralist Day to be celebrated this week

ADDIS ABABA – The 9th Ethiopian Pastoralist Day will be celebrated January 25-26, 2007 with the motto “More Commitment for Good Governance and Sustainable Pastoralist Development in the New Ethiopian Millennium.”

Federal Affairs Minister Sirajj Fegesa told a press conference yesterday that although the Ethiopian pstoralists were forgotten and discriminated for years by successive regimes in the past, they are now struggling for strengthening the ongoing development and democratization effort.

The Minister indicted that at the opening day, report focusing on the government’s response to the previous demands of the pastoralist would be presented. On the second day, report on activities carried out in pastoral areas would be presented following which experience-sharing discussion would be conducted.

According to the Minister, the Day will be Celebrated at House of Peoples’ Representatives in the presence of senior state officials, representatives of pastoralists from all states, ambassadors and about 600 concerned participants. He further said that the Day would be a good opportunity for the pastoralists to introduce to one another and share experiences.

He also urged governmental, non-governmental and other development organizations to assist pastoralists in their struggle against poverty and backwardness.

On the opening day, the pastoralists are expected to present colourful cultural show, it was learnt.
